How the 4th Gen Lexus IS relates to our LC's...

After Lexus dropped the ball on the current generation IS by not delivering a hot F model like they did with the first generation, which to this day is a legend, a new generation is among us and a lot of information is coming out. One being engine options. The B58 featured in the new Supra is one of them and my other guess is that twin turbo 4.0L V8 Lexus is developing. We won't ever see that B58 engine in our LC's but I assume the new 4.0L will be used how the 1UR V8 was with the ISF, RCF, GSF and the LC500.

As for that BMW B58 engine, here are some more details:

Quote:
Best Car Magazine in Japan is reporting that the next-generation Lexus IS sedan will be offered with the same BMW Inline-6 turbo engine that powers the all-new Toyota Supra.

The I6 engine, which is rated at 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque in the Supra, would be one of four engines for the Lexus sedan a 2.0L turbo, 2.4L turbo, and 2.5L hybrid engine would also be available based on region.

Best Car also reports that the IS is unlikely to change in size, and will weigh approximately 3,395 lbs. For referenece, the current IS tips the scales at 3,737 lbs.

(Finally, the magazine reiterates the rumor that a next-generation IS F sedan will be resurrected with the twin-turbo V6 engine from the LS flagship.)

Toyota needs to be careful about all this part sharing with BMW. I can understand them taking precautions with the new Supra, but starting to implement German engines in their Lexus products could be a costly mistake.

I don't mind any of the parts sharing.
My only beef will be if Toyota/Lexus products start deviating from what they should be. So far that hasn't been the case and i hope it stays that way.

Mercedes and Infinti have been sharing drivetrains for awhile now but they still manage to make them unique enough to stand apart from one another. I think the concern is that Toyota may lose that notion of reliability that people have come to expect with German parts.

A good warranty period with dealerships that back it up with great customer service removes any concern for reliability.
Its only once you start buying used and off warranty that Toyota's whole bullet proof built quality starts to matter.
That being the case Lexus should also dip into what other automakers have done, heck bring us a Mercedes V12!

Does anyone know what kind of tuning potential the B58 has? I have a feeling a lot of the criticism over the new Supra is because the older 2JZ engines had almost limitless aftermarket potential. Anyone thinking of doing that swap on the MKV is nuts.
